You’ve probably heard about it being illegal to collect seashells and take them out of Aruba. Maybe some of us think that this is a harmless act and if we take one or two seashells, nothing happens. But if we think that everyone who goes to the beaches thinks that way, imagine the number of shells that disappear from our beautiful beaches every year.

I’m going to tell you some of the reasons why you shouldn’t have to take home the shells that you find on Aruba’s beach or any beach. I hope that after reading this article you will be more aware that everything in nature has a function and, from now on, it will also be you who will explain to the people around you why they should not take the shells that are found on the beach, especially on Aruba.

Why you shouldn’t take seashells from Aruba’s beaches or buy seashells.

There are several studies that maintain that human influence is depleting the seashells of our beaches and pieces of corals, especially when two factors intervene: that the area is touristy and, the shells in the area are beautiful.

As you know, human beings like to have everything they like, but if we think about it, why? It is true, they are beautiful, but to have them collecting dust on any shelf does not make sense, and even more so when you discover that shells have even more functions to do in nature. So who are we to break this cycle?

If you want a souvenir, you can always take a picture of it. Also, many times, even though they are out of the water, it does not mean that they are dead or that they no longer have a use. In nature there is no waste, everything is used; in fact, humans are the only ones that generate waste without purpose.

A silent environmental impact disguised as harmless

Tourism around the world has multiplied in recent decades and most of us like to spend time on the beach. And as possession-obsessed humans, we like to take home a “free” gift like seashells.

And, I understand walking along the seashore looking for sea treasures is a favorite pastime for beachgoers of all ages. And for some, collecting shells became a lifelong hobby many, many years ago.

I suppose that like me, most of this information will make us think twice when we make that gesture that seemed so innocent or like taking some shells home and the impact of that action globally.

The gorgeous seashells, why are they there?

Shells provide a diverse swath of environmental functions: they help to stabilize beaches and anchor seaweed; they provide homes for creatures such as hermit crabs and hiding places for small fish; they are used by shorebirds to build nests; and when they break down, they provide nutrients for the organisms living in the sand or for those that build their own shells. The ocean supports many delicate ecosystems. If one thing is out of balance, the results can be devastating and every shell performs some ecological role.

An empty spiral shell for example is home for hermit crabs, they depend on it for their survival. They need to move homes when they get too big for their current shell and if they can’t find a larger one, they’ll die from exposure or get gobbled up by a predator. They could even use our trash as a new home, with all its consequences.

Now imagine what would happen if we continue to rob ocean animals of the tools they need for their survival.

What does the Aruban law say regarding seashells?

The National Ordinance Protection of Native Flora and Fauna and the Sand Ordinance prohibits the removal or export of seashells, corals, and beach sand from Aruba. Please, keep this in mind before you make the decision of taking seashells out of the island!

Because you are not allowed to leave the island with seashells, the customs officials at the airport will most likely confiscate them from you and you will also end up paying a fine. Of course, this all will lead to an unpleasant travel experience for you. So, in all said don’t takes seashells or corals, not because of the pricy fine but because you what to conserve the nature of our island as your second home!

So, enjoy the mesmerizing beauty of the seashells and corals, and leave them where they belong, in their natural environment at the beach and not just in Aruba, but on any beach in the world. Imagine you and your children and grandchildren coming to Aruba every year and always seeing beautiful seashells and corals on the beaches.

Only together we can make a difference and help protect, not just our marine life but Aruba as our home.

Hi, I am a sea glass and my journey starts as a simple piece of broken glass that was thrown into the ocean.

I was tumbling for so long time in the waves of the Caribbean, going with the flow so I don’t remember exactly where I come from. I was rolling in and out until it washed me ashore at the rough north coast of Aruba.

There I got picked up by Gloria (she is lucky) who brought me to her studio. With her talent and creativity, I become a beautiful piece of jewelry.

I have spent many years, decades rolling in the sea to achieve this beauty, smooth, frosty and it was not in vain, because now I am where I want to be, with you for many more years.

Because of my own journey, I am unique, for that reason your jewelry is really unique. I want to bring you happiness. I am an example of the wisdom of nature and I would like to transmit the energy of the ocean in your life.

I’m not a simple piece of glass, I am a Sea Glass.

My love for Aruba and sea glass started almost 20 years ago when I first came here to meet the person who would become my husband. We met online and after two years of friendship, I decided to move to Aruba. Originally I’m from Salta, Argentina where I was working as a computer programmer, but then I took the step to leave everything behind to start a whole new life in a different country. Here I became a dedicated wife and a proud mom of two lovely boys.

About six years ago in my early 40s, I felt the need to take up a new challenge and after a brief fashion design workshop, I discovered my true passion: design and jewelry creations.
Since I am eager to work and to display my art (unfortunately, due to restrictions in effect, not possible at any Art Events at the hotels for now), I have created my own online store.

This store

This was a huge challenge for me because I have not developed a website before. Consequently, it took me many hours of training, learning, and experimenting, so I could come up with a nice online store.
I would genuinely appreciate any feedback you could give me, which would help me improve my service. For instance, if there is an item you would love to see in my store or a topic you want to hear about I will gladly consider it, just reply to this email. I am in Aruba for you, so any ideas that you would love to see in my store are welcome!

Free feel to post a comment!

Hi friends, are you a sea glass lover like me? Or are you asking if you could find sea glass in Aruba?

The answer is YES! You can find sea glass on some beaches in Aruba. I have been a beachcomber/collector now for more than 15 years and I would like to share my experience with you.

If you see the picture in this post, or the picture in another article talking about another treasure on Aruba’s beaches, then you could guess that Aruba is a paradise for sea glass collectors.

The truth is that the picture in this post, my collection, is a result of many, many years of searching. The picture in the article is from a famous beach, Glass Beach of Fort Bragg, California. For sure they used the picture just to illustrate the article, but it is not in Aruba.

So, yes, you can find sea glass on Aruba’s shores BUT don’t expect to see beaches here like that in Fort Bragg except for the tiny Sea Glass Isle.

I must confess that I cannot say much about Sea Glass Isle since I have never been there (although it might sound strange being a number one fan of sea glass lol), I have only seen them in pictures, but I know that tourist frequently visits these.

I love the fact that Aruba has a beach just like the one in California, although certainly smaller and hopefully it will not disappear anytime soon.

I say this because if each visitor who comes to Aruba takes a lot of sea glass as souvenirs, unfortunately, Aruba risks losing this sea glass island attraction in a few years. So my plea to you is to be cautious when it comes to taking sea glass out of the particular tiny island.

In my case I prefer taking long walks down the beach and being unaware of what to expect, I allow Mother Nature to amaze me and surprise me with these treasures.

Where to find Sea Glass in Aruba?

I have been collecting sea glass for many years now, but it is in recent years that this pastime has become an obsession, probably because I have started making jewelry and I am thoroughly enchanted with the beauty of sea glass. It is one of the most exciting parts of my job, collecting and selecting the most beautiful pieces just for you!.

My water/vintage glass collection is collected at our seashores and each one has an interesting story to tell. It takes decades for a piece of broken glass to become a sea treasure.

Northside for me has fabulous beaches and small bays ready to be visited. All my treasures come from those beaches. Not far from Alto Vista Church, you will find different small beaches, also Wariruri Beach, Boca Prins, Rincon Beach, Grapefield Beach, Boca Grandi, Bachelor Beach to mention a few.

Basically, the spot where you look for somewhat rocky and often has pebbles and rock pools rather than being pristine and sandy most of the time is a good spot. For me, the key is the focus, yes focusing on what are you looking for, no seashells, no corals, but sea glass. So do not hesitate to bring your small bag, stop at any of the many beaches there, and enjoy the hunting, the rough sea, and the exotic beauty of this side of Aruba.

How easy is it to find them?

Many people ask me which is the best beach to look for sea glass. There is not a specific one, there are many!

As you know, Aruba has two different sides: the Southside with its calm, clear, turquoise, and sandy beaches, and the Northside with its rough and rocky ones. This is also the side or direction from which the wind blows. Sea glass is considered a kind of rubbish and it is “easier” to find them on the Northside.

Aruba has many small beaches on the North Coast that are relatively easy to access by vehicle. There is always a chance that you could find sea glass at Arashi, Malmok, Boca Catalina, or even Eagle or Palm Beach, but this is less likely to happen.

Remarkably the most common colors of sea glass you could find are white, green, and brown, but if you are lucky you might as well find some rare colors too! I do not take pieces that are not enough frosty.

It may happen that you would find very few or only craft quality, and/or just the most common colors. It happened to me many times!

If you would ask me what time would be the best time for beachcombing? Sometimes I go in the morning, low tide, and sometimes in the late afternoon between 5:00 pm-6:00 pm and I usually go once every two weeks or once a month as a family trip.

Beachcombing is a so relaxing activity. Your mind is just focusing on looking for gems of the ocean, the sounds, and the smell of the sea is a kind of meditation and also could be addictive!

Remember that you are not allowed to take local shells, sand, or coral home, but you can take a few pieces of sea glass.

If you are a sea glass lover just like me, I kindly invite you to visit my store to see for yourself what I do with the sea glass that I find on the North shores. You will see beautiful pieces of necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings.

Undoubtedly, you will find Aruba’s sea glass transformed into a piece of jewel, that whenever you wear it, will allow you to feel the beauty of Aruba.

Happy hunting!
